Vijaya Claxton, New York, USA, receives the Gertrude Ederle Award

Vijaya Claxton

When another change of the currents after 20 plus hours, close to the French shore, threatened to push her back out into the Channel but then suddenly stopped and allowed her to finally land, the boat pilot asked her helpers in surprise: "Did you pray?"

After 22 hrs 27 mins of Sept. 8, 2007, Vijaya touched French ground - on her 4th attempt. In doing so, she became the oldest female swimmer of the United States to have swum the English Channel.

For her determination and dedication she was later awarded the "Gertrude Ederle Award" for the "most meritorious swim of the year by a woman" by the Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation, like Vedika before in 2004.

At the same time, she received the "Cape Storm Award 2007" for the longest swim of the year.
